Art Stops

Whether it’s permanent, short-term, or fleeting, art in public spaces adds to the vibrancy, creativity, and spirit of our communities.

Free Pop-up Art & Activities

Sacramento Valley Spark (SVS), Regional Transit and the City of Rancho Cordova invite our community to safely re-explore outdoor art and interactivity, while also making commuting more fun and inspiring. SVS Art Stops invites participants to explore our activated transit stops at Mather Field and Sunrise from August 14 – 21, 2021. The stops will feature temporary art created through our “Upcycle Art Challenge” as well as hourly popup activities sure to inspire!

Sacramento Valley Spark is inspired by the 10 principles of Burning Man, and this project seeks to share some of these values with the broader community. You can learn more about Burning Man and it’s 10 principles here.

Artist & Pop-up Submissions

We’re inviting Sacramento artists and fun-makers to share their “art” with Art Stops participants. This could be something you do professionally or recreationally. This is ideally something that people can experience for a few minutes before boarding the next light rail train or maybe stay for a longer experience. In addition to SVS, Regional Transit, and City of Rancho Cordova marketing, we’re asking artists to invite their community to attend their event.

SVS will use the information from the application below to invite artists to fill pop-up blocks. Artists should expect to bring everything they need to host their art experience as a NYC busker might. Please visit locations in advance to understand the environment and space constraints. Artists may be eligible for reimbursement for installation costs. Artists will be expected to adhere to the below listed of don’t and don’ts.

The Activities/Installations:

  • Should make people feel happy, connected and safe
  • Need to be free of charge to the general public in alignment with Burning Man’s Principle of Gifting
  • All artists/vendors should respect current healthcare guidance
  • Should not interfere with ingress or egress of passengers
  • Should leave no trace behind
  • All flammables, sharp objects, projectiles, tripping hazards or fire elements are prohibited
  • Smoking and alcohol use prohibited on site

Applications will be accepted and processed on a rolling basis. Thank you for your interest in bringing interactive art experiences to Sacramento’s RT stops!

FAQ

  1. What are Art Stops? Art Stops is a week-long arts experience, encouraging the community to use mass transit to explore temporary, pop-up, placed art at selected Regional Transit Stops.
  2. How does one participate in Art Stops?
    • If you’d like to host a one-hour pop-up installation or activation at one of the stops, please apply above.
    • To participate in experiencing the art, purchase appropriate fare and use Regional Transit as your chauffeur to our activated stops from Aug. 14 to 21. Visit our website for a list of challenges, view the schedule, see the stops.
  3. What art will be there? Our temporary placements supplement long-term art installations at and near transit stations already. The Sunrise and Mills Station stops will debut the two winners of SVS’s “Upcycle Art Challenge.” Using recycled materials these two local artists will share a statement about “Sustainability.” Additionally, a wide assortment of pop-up activities — from laughing yoga to the funnywalk zone to silent disco — will turn our transit corridors into active bustling places filled with joy and excitement.
